PHOTO REVIEW: Ferran Adria and Kirk Mangus @MOCACleveland

09.26.14-01.18.15

Explore the intense worlds of Ferran Adrià and Kirk Mangus as The Drawing Center curator Brett Littman and MOCA ED Jill Snyder spoke with Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready at the media preview on Fri 09/26, just prior to their Fall opening bash featuring a curator’s talk, a family art studio and dance with DJEd.E.

“This exhibition expands the definition of contemporary art,” explained Jill Snyder of Ferran Adrià: Notes on Creativity, which featured whiteboard drawings right on the wall of the gallery, mocked up templates of food dishes, photos and a video loop of each of the 1846 new dishes that chef Adrià created while at elBulli in Barcelona, considered by many to be the very best restaurant and chef in the world while Adrià was head chef from 1987-2011. “We are interested in the process of creativity as expressed through drawing.”

Brett Littman, ED of The Drawing Center in NY, was fortunate enough to experience a meal there, that he described as “the most profound culinary experience of my life.”

Littman created this exhibition to “tie into the history of still lifes,” not to simply exhibit drawings. “These are notes on creativity, not drawings of food.”

When asked what Adrià and ElBulli are working on next, Littman suggested, “He is looking for his next steps. He did a critical audit at the end of every year he ran ElBulli. This is avant-garde cuisine. It has affected all chefs. Now you have to think about the 49 steps before you serve the dish.”

Rose Bouthillier, MOCA’s associate curator, gave Cool Cleveland a preview of Kirk Mangus: Things Love. His 30 years as an instructor at Kent State University, and as a mentor to many area artists, means his aggressive, playful work is familiar and iconic in Northeast Ohio. As the artist’s first comprehensive survey, the show simply blows the viewer’s mind. Small and large ceramic works, cups and sculptures, drawings and sketchbooks are all on view in this epic exhibition.
