Fri 10/3 @ 8PM
If you haven’t heard Akron/Kent folk rockers the Speedbumps yet, you have a great opportunity to check them out at the same time you’re checking out that new venue, the Music Box Supper Club, on the west bank of the Flats.
The band’s been around for a while, but it seems like they really kicked it up a few notches last year when they released their third album, the polished yet heartfelt The Harbors We Seek. They snagged slots played at Austin’s South by Southwest Music Conference and Canadian Music Week in Toronto this year, and they’ve been getting coveted slots on summer concert series like Wade Oval Wednesdays and the Akron Art Museum’s Downtown@Dusk. They did a concert with the Canton Symphony that went so well they’ve already got a return date on 2/7 next year.
Urycki, cellist Sam Kristoff, upright bassist Kevin Martinez, and percussionist Pat Hawkins play music that’s acoustic-based, woodsy, and filled with subtle spirits — spry, melancholy, pensive, hopeful. Urycki won an American Songwriter Award this year in the adult alternative category for the song “Montreal” from The Harbors We Seek, but he’s quick to point out that everyone throws in his musical two cents.
Jazz-folk ensemble the Gage Brothers opens. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
