Fri 2/23-Sat 3/10
The 1979 Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is certainly a grisly tale. The Tony Award-winning show was based on a 1973 play by Christopher Bond and added outré humor to a narrative about a psychotic villain who hooks up with his equally crazy landlady Mrs. Lovett to turn people into meat pies.
The two lead roles require strong actors who can make these twisted characters believable while singing a challenging score in this mostly sung show. When the play opens at the little Blank Canvas Theatre in the 78th Street Studios this week, Jonathan Kronenberger will direct a cast headed by Blank Canvas founder Patrick Ciamacco as Sweeney Todd and Trinidad Snider, who has previously played Mama Rose in Gypsy and Velma in Chicago, among other roles, as Mrs. Lovett.
The show runs through Sat 3/10. Tickets are $18.
