Near West Theatre Stages Play-Within-a-Play About NYC Street Singers

Fri 2/2-Sun 2/18

The 2003 play, BKLYN The Musical, which debuted on Broadway the following year, follows the stories of a group of street performers under the Brooklyn Bridge who enact the story of a French orphan named Brooklyn who comes to America, becomes a star, performs at Carnegie Hall and competes in a “Battle of the Divas” at Madison Square Garden.

Now Near West Theatre in Gordon Square will be presenting the play for three weekends, February 2-February 18.

“The story of BKLYN is a heartfelt journey about community, family, and self discovery,” BKLYN Director Nathan Henry, says. “The story feels like an urban fairytale and is told through the familiar storytelling traditions. Fostering a sense of community, having a place to belong, and feeling loved is something everyone needs and longs for at some point in their life.”

Tickets are available at nearwesttheatre.org or the box office at 216-961-6391 11am-4pm weekdays.
