Lake Erie Artists showcase on Shaker Square

Paula Atwell has always liked art, but like many of us, she stopped creating it when she left childhood. Paula was lucky–she went back to being creative in adulthood.

Paula started taking art classes when she realized she was missing something from her life while in the midst of working and raising a family. She found an innate artistic ability that surprised her, particularly since no one in her family seemed to be artistic.

She wondered where it came from until her father, a successful doctor, retired and settled down. “After he retired,” Paula says, “he sat down with a pencil and just started drawing from photographs.” He has talent, but he never used it.

She never thought her artistic experiments and eventual jewelry sales would lead to ownership of an art gallery. But years later, Paula is the sole proprietor of Lake Erie Artists Gallery on Shaker Square…

Burgers and Business
Two Dads Diner: Timeless & Kitschy

Before moving to Cleveland in 2003, I spent two years in upstate New York, working hard earning my M.B.A. at the Simon School. The winters of Rochacha, as it’s referred to by the natives, are cold, snowy, gray and the city rests just south of one of the five Great Lakes. Sound familiar?

To keep the energy going, the school would sometimes host after hour events at the local diners, places where, for $10, you could order a three-course dinner complete with canned chicken soup, a burger and fries and even a piece of chocolate pie. The decor in these diners stayed true to its 70’s blue collar origins and the yellow lighting and solo customers sipping their sole cup of coffee before stepping outside for a smoke reminded you why movies, politicians and diners go hand in hand: there’s a quiet understanding of social distance and simultaneous friendliness, a contrast of decision-making suits enjoying cheap meals next to time-clocked people in uniforms.

A good diner will serve you a cup of coffee, a sandwich and a side order of “Enjoy and carry on…”

Why the “Workout” Just Might Not Work

The recent news that the feds were rolling out a new program that would throw a lifebuoy to “underwater””homeowners like my wife and me was welcomed with glee around our household.

When I proposed marriage to Brenda over a decade ago, part of the enticement I used to get a “yes” answer was that I build her a new home.

Hell, as checkered as my past is, and the distance above my station in life I was attempting to reach matrimonially, I would have built her the Taj Mahal… if I but had the financial wherewithal…

Last month we emailed Bill Wade, Artistic Director and Founder of Inlet Dance Theatre, and asked him about his upcoming concert for Cleveland Public Theater’s Dance Works?.

Wade responded at considerable length, listing repertory that he planned to remount or upgrade and 2 totally new pieces.

Those who saw Inlet’s Cain Park concert last summer may remember CREATE, a piece Wade created on students. Wade has “upgraded” CREATE for the company as what he describes as “pop modern dance, something fun as a concert opener for schools and other audiences new to modern dance.”

Medical Mart Money Piling Up at County
Plus, Can Anyone Expect A Public Official To Notice?

Cuyahoga County taxpayers in these depression-like times have paid $91 million into the fund for the Medical Mart deal. Does anyone notice?

The Plain Dealer, our news media of record, appears to have forgotten that we have a near – or more – $1 billion project. The Med Mart has slipped off its radar apparently.

Coverage seems to be much more interested in who is running for county council in who knows where and who cares less…
