Some things change, and some never do.Tremont, for example, in some ways Cleveland’s original artist community, is stronger than ever, yet CC writer Josh Usmani, with extensive quotes from artists, gallerists and curators, questions whether it can still be called an arts community. Roldo looks back on the “spontaneous combustion” in Glenville 45 years ago this week, and wonders if some things are still the same. Mansfield laments the cancellation of the Coventry street fair due to social media chatter, and suggest strong measures.

Every time I go out to Tremont I see more people at bars and restaurants than galleries.
Don’t get me wrong — Tremont is actually one of my favorite places to enjoy drinks on patios with friends. However, there aren’t many galleries in Tremont anymore and most of those are more boutique than exhibition space.
Even Tremont’s Art Walk doesn’t have much art anymore. So, is Tremont still the artist community it once was?

Twenty-eight young pianists from around the world will spend the two weeks trying to give the performance of their lives, hoping to succeed Alexander Schimpf (pictured), winner of the 2011 biennial Cleveland International Piano Competition. Cuyahoga County Councilman Dan Brady is a great admirer of Cleveland’s 35th mayor — Tom L. Johnson. Brady is not alone in his admiration of the man who served as the Mayor of Cleveland from 1901 – 1909. Johnson, both literally and figuratively, brought Cleveland into the 20th century.

The news that the Coventry street fair, which was scheduled for Sunday, July 21, was cancelled by the City of Cleveland Heights due to “chatter on social media that talked of violence,” should be disturbing to all of us — this being the second year in a row the event has been cancelled….

Really enjoyed the discussion and hope it continues. The crux of the matter, I feel, has less to do with the gentrification of Tremont and more to do with the larger problem of Clevelanders liking to look, more than they like to buy….

And because of the competitive dynamics, the cost of keeping them necessarily (however seemingly unfair) involves these sweetheart deals…..
