Her city is still here

There wasn’t a ban on photos at this Valentine’s Day 2009 concert. Quite the contrary. We had arranged for media tickets and a photo pass from the presenter, and were met outside the lobby of the beautifully restored and historic Akron Civic Theatre [pictured] to receive the pass and specific instructions. At the Civic, we notice hand-scrawled signs “No Camera Phones,” affixed to the stage. There exists, of course, a countervailing tradition, most famously practiced by The Grateful Dead, to allow not only unfettered photos, but to allow and even encourage audio and video recording of all concerts by fans and media alike. I was using my iPhone all night, and you can follow my Twitter (@thomasmulready) and Facebook (http://www.profile.to/thomasmulready) posts for the evening of 02.14.09 right up to the time of the concert. It had been a lovely evening. But first a little history…

Charles Michener: Social Director, or Social Conscience?
Plus: Michael Eric Dyson for Secretary of… Something!

There’s a tale about an Old West judge who would listen so sympathetically to the person on trial, empathizing so much with their plight, that even when the orneriest, downright meanest man in the territory was on trial for murder, the judge was so kind to the scoundrel during the proceedings that, when he sentenced the man to hang, the galoot — to everyone’s astonishment — said, “Thank you, your honor.” The moral of this tale is, it’s all in the delivery… how the message is served up.

And my good friend Charles Michener served up a humdinger of a message at the Cleveland City Club last Wednesday afternoon. He praised the city’s strengths, and then stated some simple, profound truths that, if taken to heart by the local citizenry, would greatly assist the region in bouncing back — in lifting ourselves out the doldrums we’ve been mired in for seemingly forever now. However, there was a universality to his comments that make them applicable to virtually any large Midwestern city or region going through tough times…

Ballet Hispanico is not the only dance company out there with a Hispanic or Latino identity, but they’re generally considered the best among many. Certainly they’re the oldest, in continuous operation since 1970 under the artistic direction of founder Tina Ramirez who, at age 80-something, has just announced her plans to retire as artistic director this year.

As part of her final go round, Ramirez will be performing a cameo role in the company’s revival of Stages, choreographer Graciella Daniele’s depiction of the seven ages of a dancer. We recently interviewed the long-time Artistic Director by phone and here’s what she had to say…

City of CLE Councilman Brain Cummins invites BFD readers to help shape last week’s joint Committee Hearing: “Have a question for The Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners (CCBC) and Merchandise Mart Properties Inc. (MMPI) officials regarding the proposed Convention Center and Medical Mart?” Readers comment:

At the initial public hearings in July, 2007 and in all public statements promoting the project at that time, we were advised of the urgency of building a convention center that would “attract” or “draw” a medical mart that would be built entirely with private money. We were promised repeatedly (I’m pretty sure both Dimora and Hagan said this; I would have to look at my notes) that NO public money would be spent on the medical mart. Somewhere along the line this morphed into how MUCH private money would be put into the medical mart and how much it would cost the taxpayers. When, why and how did this change, and why was the change not clearly stated to a public which had been told that it would get a free medical mart in return for committing to the loss-leader convention center? comment by Anastasia

According to Fred Nance, as reported in a Plain Dealer article, bonds for the convention center will be taxable rather than being tax-free. Taxable bonds generally carry a higher interest rate than comparable tax-free bonds. How much more interest will taxpayers pay because the bonds are taxable and not tax-free? What do the taxpayers got in return for the higher interest payments? comment by Vincent Perricelli

Can we get a detailed market analysis for both the convention center and medical mart and financial projections, along with key assumptions? These should be matters of public record. comment by Ed Morrison

The question I asked several times – Where is the cost benefit analysis – what’s the ROI for county taxpayers? Each time I got the “bellhops will make and spend money” answer. comment by Susan Miller

Which county officials are under criminal investigation for their part in the MMPI deal? If none, why? In particular, is it not illegal for Hagan to steer hundreds of millions of dollars to his close personal friend Chris Kennedy? If not, why not? comment by Mark Schumann

Eat up, Cleveland! Restaurant Week 2009 is Here!
Do You Really Need An Excuse to Eat Really Good Food?

How about a $30 meal at one of Cleveland’s finest downtown restaurants coupled with $2 parking? Or an opportunity to witness food presented beautifully and creatively by award-winning chefs? Or romance in the ambience of a cozy booth in a secluded corner? Or food that tastes so good, you wish the evening would never end? Still looking for an excuse? How about 43 different restaurants to choose from?

Starting this Monday, February 23, through Sunday, March 1, Downtown Cleveland Restaurant Week 2009 will be in full swing. What this means is that some of the region’s best restaurants are offering carefully-chosen menus, which will include appetizers/salads, entrees, and desserts, every evening after five. During Downtown Cleveland Restaurant Week this week, we have the chance to sample the culinary talents of our local chefs at great prices…

Luxe Kitchen & Lounge
Linda Eisenstein shares her “Secret Place” with CC Readers

Imagine you are on a European vacation, and you just hit the foodie jackpot: the perfect little bistro. You know, the don’t-miss “secret place” they rave about in Frommer’s or Fodor’s, where the ingredients are fresh, the place is unpretentious and inexpensive, the proprietor and staff are friendly, and food is, well, simply divine. “Oh, man,” you think, “I can’t wait to brag about this place to my friends, but I am going to flippin’ die when I get back home and can’t have this meal again.”

Then the friendly gods intervene and DING DING DING! You discover that your perfect bistro has been teleported to Cleveland, a block and a half from your house. Now you have just a hint of why I am truly, madly, deeply in love with Marlin Kaplan’s Luxe Kitchen & Lounge, the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood joint that is also arguably the region’s best restaurant…

Prodigal Son
Oliver Buck & the New Madrids
Cuyahoga Records

Oliver Buck calls his second release Prodigal Son a road album. It’s about the journey of moving back to Cleveland after 15 years in other places, the last five in Kansas, while trying to make a living playing music. And the 13 songs on the album all stick to that theme. Buck writes wonderful songs and offers them up neat and old school. Think simple, straight-ahead honest voice — backed by guitar, bass and drums and recorded on analog tape without digital manipulation. Think John Prine or Johnny Cash.

There are more than a few standout cuts, with the title track, “Once Around the Sun,” “Milwaukee,” and “The Troubadour Life” among the best. Also included is a very respectable cover of Bill Monroe’s “Sitting on Top of the World.” We’re particularly fond of “Autumn in Kansas,” “Gina from Tulsa,” and “County Jail Blues.” You can hear samples of many of these cuts — and keep up with Buck’s busy performance schedule with his band the New Madrids (bassist Adam Rich and drummer Ernie Richmann) at his website http://www.OliverBuck.com. I witnessed Buck open for Leon Russell at the Beachland Ballroom recently and think this guy is really good; I hope things go well for him in his return to Northeast Ohio.

Cleveland Orchestra @ Severance Hall 2/12 In the annals of “how to put together a symphony orchestra program,” the standard recipe is overture, concerto (intermission), symphony. In today’s multi-media age, a DVD of this Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall program should serve nicely as the “and here’s how to do it!” part of the lesson. It really doesn’t get much better than this one. Until next time, of course. It seems as though in this new year of 2009, each week’s concert is more stupendous than the one previous. Or at least equal to…

Sweeney Todd @ Lakeland 2/13 Martin Friedman, Lakeland Civic Theater’s director of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is a self-professed Stephen Sondheim fanatic. As he states in the play’s program, he has been “delighted, enchanted and challenged by Sondheim.” Friedman has always wanted to direct Sweeney Todd, considered by many to be one of the master’s most difficult shows to stage — due to the love or hate relationship it often engenders with audiences. His path to the production was thwarted when, while staging the show last year, a heart condition slammed on the breaks to opening. Now feeling fine, he has completed his quest with an audience pleaser…

The Past is Often Purposefully Hidden From Us

During the first anti-trust trial between the city of Cleveland and the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. (CEI), I walked up to the company’s former chairman Elmer Lindseth. He had been attending the trial as a spectator. I asked the 78-year old retired executive if he ever had expected to see the day that the corporate leaders of CEI would ever be brought into a court of law by the city.

He hesitated to answer. I asked him if maybe he didn’t want to respond.

He smiled and said, “The times are different and things change.”

Things do change. They also often also remain the same. So we have to pay attention to our past. It reveals our future…

On the real way to City Therapy (see links here and here) In my humble opinion, if greater Cleveland spent more resources on “doing” rather than “talking about doing” we would be a much more vibrant community. It sometimes seems like we focus too much time, energy, creativity and money on meetings, studies, reports, white papers, luncheons, think tanks, analyses, discussions and proposals. This leaves smaller resources available for actual projects. As a former entrepreneur who is now learning the ways of the non-profit and governmental worlds, it has been an interesting [and sometimes frustrating] learning curve. Let’s all push for more “doing” and less “talking about doing.”
