The Great Lakes are one of this country’s (and Canada’s) true treasures, the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world. And our own Lake Erie is the one most dependent on tourism, recreation, boating and fishing for its economy. But being the shallowest, it’s also the most threatened by pollution, invasive species, climate change, overfishing, and algae blooms which rendered Toledo’s water unusable for three days in 2014.
Obviously then, “The State of the Great Lakes” is a topic of huge importance in this region, so it’s fitting that the City Club has invited Chris Winslow, director of OSU Sea Grant’s college program, to talk about it.
Winslow coordinates research with OSU’s Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island off South Bass Island (you can take a water taxi from downtown Put-in-Bay and visit on certain days to learn about their work). He works with researchers and scientists who are looking for ways to protect the health of the lake’s ecosystem; learn about the critical work they do to avert threats to a healthy lake and where we stand now that the federal government is threatening to defund that work.
The talk will also be live steamed on the City Club’s website, starting at noon. You can text questions to 330-541-5794
