The Sphinx Organization was founded in 1997 to promote social justice, inclusion and diversity through classical music. It offers musical programs at all skill levels, but it’s Sphinx Virtuosi is a professional-level chamber orchestra featuring Black and Latino musicians.
Five of the soloists from the ensemble will be the guests of the Tuesday Musical Association at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall. Each represents one of the sections of the orchestra: violinists Rubén Rengel and Jannina Norpoth, violist Dana Kelley, cellist Thomas Mesa and bassist Christopher Johnson.
They’ll be presenting a program called “Land of the Free,” comprising music by Samuel Barber, Antonin Dvorak, Xavier Foley (who is also a musician in the Sphinx soloist program) and others.
