Surrealism, with its often recognizable subjects in bizarre and distorted settings (much as they appear in dreams), is a genre of art that has remained engaging to artists and audiences since it first appeared nearly 100 years ago. Almost everyone with even a smidgen of cultural knowledge knows Salvador Dali’s melting clocks and Rene Magritte’s bowler-hatted businessman with the apple on his face.

The new show at the Lakeland Community College Gallery, titled Dreams & Visions: Surrealism and Fantasy Art, curated by gallery director Mary Urbas, offers interpretations of the style by 55 artists, both local and from around the country. The work is in a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, collage, textiles, glass, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media.

Dreams & Visions opens with a reception Thu 9/22 from 7-9pm where artist Ross Bochnek will do a special presentation of his interactive kinetic sculpture, “Entheoartifact l.” The show will be on view through Fri 11/4. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9am-9pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am-5pm.
