Cleveland Orchestra Player Showcases Member as Soloist in World Premiere

The Cleveland Orchestra has welcomed many world-class soloists to join it onstage at Severance Music Center, from red-hot rising stars to established classical music legends.

But from time to time, its own members step forward as soloists, exhibiting the same type of skills as the guest artists. This week its piccolo player Mary Kay Fink’s turn. The Oberlin graduate has been a member of the orchestra since 1990 and frequently distinguished herself as a soloist as well as a section player. This time she’ll be stepping up to take the featuring role in the world premiere of Aurora by Israeli composer Oded Zehavi, which was commissioned especially for her.

The program opens and closes in 19th -century Germany, kicking off with Carl Maria von Weber’s Overture to Oberon, and concluding with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4. Fabio Luisi conducts. Get tickets here.
