Cleveland Orchestra Composer in Residence Performs at Karamu

Wed 5/1 @ 7PM

Starting in 2022, Chicago-born, New Jersey-based flutist/composer Allison Loggins-Hull became the Cleveland Orchestra’s Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow, a three-year appointment now in its second season. Included in that program are compositions about Cleveland history, chamber music concerts and workshops with students.

She brings a fresh outlook to music with interests that span from symphonic and chamber music, film scores and electronic compositions and she often works with African-American cultural themes. Last year, she led a flute ensemble backing a performance by Lizzo (herself a flutist) at the Met Gala.

This spring, she’s curating a series of intimate performances, called the In Community Chamber Concert Series, in collaboration with three community organizations. The final performance in the series takes place this week at Karamu House and it should be sensational.

Loggins-Hull herself will be performing with members of the Cleveland Orchestra and actors and dancers from Karamu’s own ensembles. The program includes three pieces: Loggins-Hull’s own Persist, Her fellow African-American flutist/composer Valerie Coleman’s Portraits of Langston, based on poems by Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes, who spent part of his formative teen years in Cleveland including working at Karamu; and excerpts from Choir Boy, Karamu’s scheduled spring production which was recently cancelled.

The performance is free; tickets are required. Go here.
