Sax player Bobby Selvaggio may have returned to his native Cleveland after getting his masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and spending several years living and performing there, but he never stands still. Now the director of jazz studies at Kent State University where he got his undergraduate degree, he’s released a bunch of records and performs with ensembles of various sizes and styles.
This week, he’ll be playing with a quartet of stellar musicians including Akron pianist Theron Brown, one of the area’s rising young jazz stars; bassist Paul Thompson who toured with Maynard Ferguson’s and Stanley Turrentine’s bands; and drummer James Johnson III, Pittsburgh artist/educator who has toured extensively with the Ahmad Jamal Trio.
The group will perform at the Bop Stop on Friday and BluJazz Akron on Saturday, doing a show that features new original material. Tickets are $12.
