Apollo’s Fire Explores the Crossroads of Faith, Culture & Music

Last year, Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland’s baroque orchestra, debuted a program called O Jerusalem! Crossroads of Three Faiths, designed by the group’s founder/artistic director Jeannette Sorrell. In it the ensemble depicted in music and poetry the coming together of Jewish, Christians and Muslims in the Middle East. It featured selections from Claudio Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers, featuring influences of Arabic love songs and Jewish cantorial singing.

The performers that Apollo’s Fire is bringing to the stage for the program include those of Jewish, Palestinian Muslim and Christian backgrounds, with a mixture of instruments such as oud, theorbo, medieval harp, vielle, qanoon, strings, wooden flutes, and various percussion, along with vocals. Featuring performers include Daphna on wind instruments, Palestinian musician Zafer Tawil on oud and qanoon, with vocals by soprano Amanda Powell, tenors Sorab Wadia and Jacon Perry and baritone Jeffrey Strauss. They’ll perform Thu 3/5 at the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, Mon 3/9 at Fairlawn Lutheran Church, Tue 3/10 at The Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood and Wed 3/11 at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium. The Avon Lake UCC and CMA performances will also feature projected images. The Fairlawn concert includes an aftershow “Afterglow” reception, with Middle Eastern treats such as baklava and a chance to meet the musicians. And each evening will include a pre-concert talk by Daphna Mor an hour before start time.
