Women’s Air & Space Museum Honors Painesville-Born Flying Ace in her Hometown

Sun 4/30 @ 4-8PM

The International Women’s Air & Space Museum, located at Burke Lakefront Airport, is one of Cleveland’s lesser-known museums, but it works hard to make people more aware of the contributions women have made to flight.

As part of that mission, it’s hosting “Come Fly With Marge,”a tribute to pilot Margaret Hurlburt. And because she was born and raised in Painesville and taught at Harvey High School there, the event takes place at the 200-year-old Rider’s Inn on Mentor Avenue in Painesville.

Hurlburt attended Bowling Green State University, before returning to Lake County and learning to fly at the Willoughby Airport. She served in WW II in the Women’s Air Service Pilots from 1943-45 and in 1947 set the international women’s flight-speed record. Sadly, while participating in an air show in Decorah, Iowa with the Flying Tigers aerial service, she was killed at the age of 32. She packed a lot into that short time.

The tribute dinner features a buffet dinner, cash bar, displays and presentations about Hurlburt and her life, a silent auction and live band. Tickets are $45 for general admission and $75 for patron’s tickets.

RSVP at 216.623.1111 or online at iwasm.org.
