Go Behind the Scenes at CMA's Martin Puryear Show

Thu 7/16 @ 4-7:30PM

In April, the Cleveland Museum of Art opened a major show featuring the work of influential American sculptor, organized jointly by CMA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with close collaboration from the artist. It’s the most significant show of work by the influential artist in a couple of decades. The show, called Martin Puryear: Nexus, follows the artist from his early 1960s work, exploring how his use of form, materials and process evolved. It looks at his influences including the natural world, African American history and material culture traditions from around the world. It includes both new and iconic works, along with prints, drawing and other documentation of outdoor commissions he has created globally. It runs through Sunday August 9, and you should make sure not to miss it.

This week, CMA is hosting another special event hosted by The Sculpture Center in connection with the show called “Martin Puryear: Materials, Making, and Preservation.” CMA’s Senior Conservator of Objects and Head of Objects Conservation Beth Edelstein will give a rare, behind-the-scenes tour of the show, sharing insights about the materials Puryear uses, his construction techniques, and the artistic decisions surrounding the installation of the show. Afterward, ticketholders will get together for a family-style dinner and conversation at Home Bistro in Little Italy.
