The influence of the “Hot Club” jazz sound, which swept Paris in the 1930s, driven by musicians such as violinist Stephane Grapelli and guitarist Django Reinhardt, has proven enduring. In recent decades, it’s shown a resurgence with new “Hot Club” ensembles spring up everywhere. Its distinctive sound is sometimes referred to as “Gypsy jazz,” a nod to Reinhardt’s Romani roots.
One such modern band is Djangophonique — the name gives it away — a Michigan-based quintet that builds on the French “Hot Club” tradition, with a dollop of pre-war nostalgia and plenty of contemporary pizzazz. It features guitarist Andrew Brown, rhythm guitarist Dave Brendena, upright bassist Dave Sterns and clarinetist Tyler Rindo, with a different instrumentation from the other “Hot Clubs” giving it a distinctive sound even before it added another element not found in traditional versions: vocalist Katie Lynne. Its 2022 album Introducing Djangophonique gives just a taste of its sound.
