CMA's MIX Party Is All About Cleveland Superhero, Superman

Fri 4/3 @ 6-10PM

Each month, the Cleveland Museum of Art comes up with a different theme for its wildly popular MIX party which fills its Ames Family Atrium with music, dancing and more. This month’s theme is “Man of Steel,” and it’s what you think it is: Superman, the superhero conceived of by a pair of Glenville (Cleveland) teenagers, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in the 1930s.

Music will be provided by trumpet player/electronics & production whiz Donald Malloy aka Wave Magnetik who’ll mix his originals and revamped covers with some reimagined superhero themes. There’ll be the usual food and drink available for purchase, matching the theme of the night (not sure what a superhero food item looks like). But this month the Atrium will also host a variety of special guests with superhero items and displays. The Rust Belt Humanities Lab will be giving away buttons by Superman artist Sina Grace, while Carol and John’s Comic Shop will have free Superman comics for the first 500 people to claim them. Superscript Comics and Games will be on hand with a superhero photo op activation, and artists Sequoia Bostwick and Anna Meyer will be drawing cartoons of attendees. The Cleveland Public Library’s Ohio Center for the Book will have a display of Superman memorabilia, and the Siegel & Shuster Society will host a Lois Lane and Clark Kent look-alike contest from 6-7:20pm with winners announced at 7:30. Feel free to dress in appropriately themed outfits but keep in mind that full-face masks, oversized costumes and weapon-like props are banned.

The galleries are open as usual and tickets to MIX also include free admission to the museum’s brand-new special exhibit Manet and Morisot, depicting in painting the relationship between these two key late 19th century Parisienne artists: Edouard Manet, considered the launching pad for modern art, and Berthe Morisot, the only woman to exhibit with the impressionists.
