Fri 2/27 @ 8-10PM
Melanie Emig is a Cleveland-based vocalist, pianist, educator and music curator who has performed with Apollo’s Fire, Quire Cleveland and the Trinity Cathedral Chamber Choir among others and has a piano study at The Music Settlement. (While googling her, I also found her testimony opposing gerrymandering, which is always a plus!)
She’s doing at little something on her own this weekend, performing avant-garde composer Morton Feldman’s 1982 composition Three Voices to mark the composer’s 100th birthday. Three Voices was written for voice and pre-recorded tracks as a memorial to his friend poet Frank O’Hara. The work contains only a few fragments of text taken from O’Hara’s 1957 poem “Wind.”
She’ll be performing at a concert presented by the Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project at the former Convivium 3, at 1433 E. 33rd Street in AsiaTown.
She’ll be joined on the bill by the Mortimore/Young duo featuring double bassist and composer J. Tracy Mortimore and oboe/English horn player, educator and composer Lenny Young, who have been collaborating for more than 20 years in various projects. Young, originally from Toronto, has played bass with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony since 2016, while Young has performed with a variety of regional symphonies in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Together, their forte is exploring the range of possibilities in improvised music and creating a dialogue between their two melodic instruments.
It’s a $15 suggested donation at the door but they always emphasize that no one is turned away for lack of funds. And if you want to give more support to type of improvised, experimental music they present, I’m sure they would be grateful.
