Sunday 11/9 @ 6PM
Cleveland’s Drumplay, which has been making music for more than 30 years and has released ten albums, is a one-of-a-kind ensemble. Its blend of world music and jazz has been performed by a constantly changing group of Cleveland’s outstanding musicians who play “rhythmprovisations,” which is what their improvised takes on music that folds in Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Middle Eastern motifs. One of the most distinctive aspects of their earlier world was the spoken word contributions of Cleveland poet Daniel Thompson who passed away in 2004. Now that spoken word element is provided by Cleveland’s most skillful and prominent spoken-word poet today, Ray McNiece.
The band will be performing at the Winchester Music Tavern in a concert called Homeless for the Holidays Too, to benefit NEOCH, the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the homeless, reflecting Thompson’s legacy of passionate activism on behalf of the homeless. In addition to McNiece, the evening will feature special guest vocalist/flute player Nancy Redd.
