Most of the concerts presented by the Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project feature challenging music that’s usually improvisational, frequently eschewing traditional musical forms and often drawing on a mixture on atypical sounds and sound-making devices. Many of the artists are multi-disciplinary, adding visual and other elements to their performances.
But few are as extreme as their next headliner. Texas-based Ak’Chamel, The Giver of Illness or “Fourth World Post-Colonial Cultural Cannibalists.” The duo is as much a performance group as a music ensemble, with outre homemade costumes and instruments, and the “rituals” that comprise their show. Their sound has been described as “desert-scorched psychedelia, post-apocalyptic shamanism, and lo-fi ritual-folk.” It will clearly be a different experience.
Opening the show is Oberlin-based improviser/composer Aaron Dilloway, a longtime presence in Cleveland’s underground noise music scene, who manipulates tape loops, voice, and other sound sources.
