An Inconvenient Theater…?
The Imaginative Creativity of Near West Theatre

It’s on the third floor of a 100+ year-old building, with rickety stairs and no elevator, escalator or air conditioning. Of course, they do full-scale costumed and staged productions there — in the summertime! And they don’t even charge a reasonable price for their tickets! Six dollars a person? C’mon! Movies cost more than that! How good can they be, anyway?

Well, if you ever see even one production of the Near West Theatre, you’ll say it’s the truly incredible theater! You might even think it’s the best theater production you’ve ever seen. Then you’ll wonder: “how do they get so much out of so many people who volunteer their time and energy for months at a time…?”

Awesome, Beautiful & Child-Friendly Outings
A.K.A.: The ABC’s of Outdoor Adventures

Some of the best things in life really are free just like the old Sam Cooke song says. This includes most outings into the great outdoors. An outdoor excursion holds many benefits for kids including exercise (a.k.a. wearing them out!), exploration, understanding the value of nature… and the pure fact that we all can benefit from a little fresh air.

To put it simply, it’s good for us! And, if you live in the very cool city of Cleveland, there are tremendous resources available in the region to explore.

So, where to start? We’ve got some ideas…

Taking a Bite Outta Akron at the National Hamburger Festival

It is wholly tempting for me to travel down the “Schweddy Balls” Saturday Night Live skit path when merely thinking about this mouth-watering festival. I could fill a page with puns and double entendres, but I’ll leave that up to you.

But if you are indeed a serious beef lover like I am, then you better get your buns (natch!) over to Lock 3 Park in Downtown Akron for the National Hamburger Festival, Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19. Think live music, burger-themed games and, well, stuffing your face for a good cause — Akron Children’s Hospital. It’s a win-win situation…

IngenuityFest 2009 was a huge success, with strong attendance all weekend long. Cool Cleveland attended everything from the audacious Big Bang opening ceremony with hundreds of drums, to the wild antics of Peachcake on the Mainstage, plus dozens of delights in between, and shot photos and video of it all.

Ingenuity director James Levin spoke with Cool Cleveland: “Ballpark attendance estimates are 35,000, which is a bit more than last year. More people bought tickets through Dave’s markets, which is great. We’ve heard nothing but raves: great energy, life on the streets. People loved Opera in the Alley, Mifune, dancer Lisa Lock, Evolution Control Committee and the North Coast Men’s Chorus. Asterisk Gallery, The Magic Story Table and Alex Boxerbaum were among the most talked about exhibits.”

Mr. Frazier Offers a “Two-fer”

Last week Attorney General Eric Holder spoke at the Vera Institute of Justice’s Third Annual Justice Address, an annual meeting featuring a prominent national figure who explores important justice issues of our time. In his remarks, Holder outlined the Department of Justice’s agenda for reducing crime rates and the cost of incarceration, issues that he characterized as the Department’s main concerns…

Based on my years of work in the reentry field, I can unequivocally state that Holder has it exactly right: Work experience and education are the two main areas prison officials should be focusing on if society wants to reduce the costs of incarceration in America. The real question is…

Washington Post Wanted Profit From Access
…But There Are Other Means

I’ve always had a queasy feeling when local politicians sit down for what are private meetings with editors of the Plain Dealer. It’s like asking for a command performance on the part of the newspaper. And it’s like going on bended knee by the elected official. Just leaves a bad taste.

Why not cover the elected official in a normal manner, or go to his or her office and interview them? After all, they’re elected, not you…

On Casinos in Cleveland Jeff Biasella’s column here I’ve always thought it more fitting to have a casino near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame than another museum. My reasoning being [is] that Rock and Roll has (or used to have) a feeling of sin or naughtiness about it, and, obviously, so do casinos.
From Cool Cleveland reader Kirk Jusko patronATcuyahoga.lib.oh.us

No Dice: A vote Against on Casinos… I read your article on Casinos in Cleveland. My vote would be no. For four different reasons: 1. I look around the City and don’t see how casinos could benefit the City. Cleveland already has enough issues to deal with (corruptions, shootings, questions of downtown safety, questionable police chiefs, etc) and they don’t need to add gambling issues on top of it. The city needs to figure out how to take care of itself first…
