Most of the time classical guitarists perform as solo artists, or occasionally in a duo format. But the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet approaches the instrument with more firepower — and expands on its repertoire.
Formed in 1980, with three of its four founding members still in the ensemble, the group uses the nylon-string classical guitar to explore a wide range of genres including rock, bluegrass, jazz, folk, Latin and world music from Ireland, Africa, and Asia. And they still manage to maintain a repertoire of standard classical guitar pieces.
They’re coming back to perform again for the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society, this time at First Unitarian Church in Shaker Heights, where they’ll play everything from Elizabeth lute music to the overture from Giaochino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville to jazz guitarist Pat Metheny’s nearly 30-minute “Road to the Sun.” They’ll also play the Hungarian Rhapsody #2 in C sharp minor by Franz Liszt and the world premiere of “Chaconne” by Robert Beaser.
Tickets are $30; $25 for seniors; $10 for students.
