Mulberry Creek Herb Farm is a family-owned, all-organic farm in Huron, where you can find the a dizzying variety of herbs such as oregano, lavender, thyme, rosemary and basil, as well as herbs you’ve never even heard of. They also have a large selection of fairy garden pants (miniatures), aloes and vegetable starters.
Their expansive, visitor-friendly spread is also the site of their annual Herb Fair, which comes at the close of the spring/summer planting season. Each year’s fair has a theme and we’re really excited that this year’s is New Orleans (where they’ve already been harvesting their tomatoes for two months!) It’s dedicated to the culture and cuisine of one of the country’s most distinctive cities.
The fair features a meadow filled with more than 30 vendors who make what they sell, from pottery to candles, soaps to baby clothes, essential oils to meditation sessions. It includes free talks in the outdoor pavilion on using herbs and making such New Orleans treats as bananas foster. And from 1-4pm each day Ragtime Rick and the Chefs of Dixieland will play traditional jazz, music believed to have begun in New Orleans.
There’ll be Qidong in the meadow on Saturday, a tour of the farm’s specialty New Orleans garden on Sunday, and food trucks, craft beer and baked goods both days. Mitchell’s Ice Cream will be on hand and they usually make a flavor in line with the year’s theme. We’re hoping it’s praline, not gumbo.
In addition, Mulberry Creek will be having its annual plant sale in case you’ve got a few holes in your garden or you forgot to water something and it died. Admission is $5 for adults, which includes a free herb; kids under 16 are free.
