One of the biggest stories in the news now is the possibility of the upcoming presidential election being undermined or tampered with. While the president babbles about imaginary threats that reveal he knows nothing about how elections systems work — for instance, that mail-in voting and absentee voting are the same thing, and that it has functioned safely for decades with a vanishing small amount of “fraud” — there are very real threats of voter suppression and foreign interference, both of which occurred in 2016.
So there is reason to be concerned about the security of the U.S.’s election process (although many of the most panicky scenarios are as absurd as Trump’s contentions). What’s a real threat and what isn’t? That’s the topic of the next edition of Happy Dog Takes on the World, which will be virtual and not actually AT the Happy Dog. It’ll look at the attempts by Russia, China and Iran to spread disinformation in the form of disguised social media attacks and even attempts at cyber attacks on voter registration systems (there’s no real evidence that such attacks on the actual voting process and results are possible). And, with a huge upswing in mail-in, dropoff and in-person early voting due to the pandemic, how does that change calculations?
