Bridges and Barriers, now on view at Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, uses photography to look at how Cleveland’s landscape throws up obstacles in the path of its citizens and how they work to overcome them. Artists in the show include the late Stephen Bivens, Jef Janis, Chuck Mintz, Lauren Pacini and participants in Shooting without Bullets, an organization which uses art to help young people of color thrive. The show is on view through November 14.
in conjunction with the show, Artists Archives is presenting a virtual panel discussion titled“Through Our Lens: Photography as a Tool of Social Justice.”
Cleveland artist/activist Kristi Copez will moderate a panel which includes Nicole R. Fleetwood, Professor of American Studies and Art History at Rutgers University and co-curator of traveling photo exhibition Prison Nation,looking at mass incarceration; Barbara Tannenbaum, Curator of Photography and Chair of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the Cleveland Museum of Art; and Amanda D. King, founder and Creative Director of Shooting Without Bullets.
They’ll talk about how images have changed the conversation about police brutality and driven social justice activism as well as the problems created by ubiquitous media. The 45-minute conversation with be followed by a Q&A.
