Vocalist/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer/engineer/studio owner Jay Bentoff has been part of the Cleveland music scene for more than three decades. In the 90s, he was associated with the local Sound of the Sea label and the surrounding folk rock scene. He’s played in bands such as Sputnik with Sound of the Sea owner Alan Grandy and the Kind.
Bentoff has now released a set of four new songs he’s calling Music from the Forgotten Triangle. He says it’s a teaser for an album called Cross the River he’s currently working on. “Music From The Forgotten Triangle is mostly new songs and is inspired by and for these times,” he says. The name comes from a desolate, largely abandoned section of Cleveland’s east side off Kinsman Road. The songs reflect a desolate, somber state of mind, shot through with brief flashes of hope and energy.
Recorded and mixed at his own Dark tree studios, the cast includes a host of names from the 90s Cleveland folk-rock scene, including singer/songwriter John McGrail on guitars, percussion, keyboards, harmonica and vocals; Chris Solt on fretless bass and mandolin; fellow Sputnik member Jeff Harmon on drums; Beth Woyshville, who performed with Hard Rain and Angst Café in the 90s, on vocals; and Bentoff’s late ex-wife, folksinger Cindy Mackay, on vocals.
