In the 1957 film Funny Face, Audrey Hepburn plays a dowdy (ha!), intellectual book store clerk. Fred Astaire is a fashion photographer whose editor is pushing him to look for the “next big trend” and think they’ll find it in a bookstore. Somehow, they manage to discover that there’s beauty under that dowdy appearance (go figure!) and shock of all shocks, Astaire falls for her, although — as is typical in an Astaire romantic film — misunderstandings keep them apart until the finale. The film’s romantic quality is enhanced by songs by George and Ira Gershwin such as “S’Wonderful, “Let’s Kiss and Make Up,”” and “How Long Has This Been Going On?”
Funny Face is the subject of The Musical Theater Project’s next Movies at Home segment. TMTP’s artistic director Bill Rudman has filmed a video telling viewers what to look for while watching the movie. Then stream the movie on Amazon Prime or YouTube.
Finally, join Rudman on Zoom Thursday March 25 for a discussion of the film and a Q&A. Join in here.
