Sax player Matthew Alec studied both classical music and jazz while getting his degree in music at Kent State University. He performed with Akron soul rockers Winslow who made a splash in the local music scene from 2005 through 2016 and also toured extensively, and during that time, recorded a pair of solo albums.
Once that band called it a day, he formed jazz-fusion quintet Matthew Alec and the Soul Electric in 2017, playing music he describes as a blend of jazz, funk, pop and soul. And in 2020, this go-getter he formed his own label called Cleveland Time Records to promote northeast Ohio jazz artists. They released their own debut album, also called Cleveland Time in early 2021.
Now they’re celebrating the release of a second album called Live at the Bop Stop!, which features jazz trombone legend Tom “Bones” Malone (who also played on their debut album) and what they describe as “an all-star cast of NE Ohio talent performing soul jazz, blues, and funk classics.”
The release show will take place at Jilly’s in Akron. The show is free but you can reserve a seat here.
