Sometimes musicians are happy in their bands but have music in them that the band doesn’t offer an outlet for. Hence, the side project. We saw it happen with guitarist Holden Laurence of Cleveland’s popular The Modern Electric, and also with multi-instrumentalist Mark Porostosky who has performed for more than six years with the busy, successful local indie folk band The Lighthouse and the Whaler, which has done many cross-country tours.
In the last several years, he and TLATW bandmate, drummer Ryan Walker and vocalist Susan Ulle have been wrking under the name Poro, an indie pop ensemble the band bio features “a sensitive and unique version of melodic acoustic pop that could be compared to the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Copeland and Gregory Alan Isakov.”
In early 2017, the group released an EP called Treat Yourself, which they’re now following with another called Eyes. Check them out and pick up a copy at their release show at the Beachland Tavern. You’ll get to hear another red-hot Cleveland band, the quartet Punch Drunk Tagalongs, fronted by the charismatic Alisha Stahnke, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina folk rockers Shiloh Hill.
Tickets are $8 in advance, $12 at the door.
