Once again, Akron musician Ryan Humbert of the Shootouts is bringing other musicians together for a special project. This one is called “Won’t Back Down: N.E.O. Celebrates the Music of Tom Petty,” featuring more than a dozen area musicians, as a benefit for The Summit FM’s Marilyn Stroud Music Alive Program which provides musical instruments to students who can’t afford them.
Humbert hosts an all-star house band that includes guitarists John Anthony of the Vindys and Erin Vaughn, bassist Paul Lewis, Vindys drummer Ed Davis, keyboard player Ben Evans, and Shootouts vocalist Emily Bates on harmony vocals. Humbert will also play guitar and add harmony vocals.
Guest artists who will each perform two Tom Petty songs are Shanna Delaney (of By Light We Loom), Corey King (Ohio Weather Band), Jackie Popovec &. Rick Deak (The Vindys), Jeff Klemm, Brian Lisik, Cody J. Martin, Marc Lee Shannon (Michael Stanley &. The Resonators) and Tracey Thomas (of Unit 5).
The ensemble will do two sets, the first features Petty’s 1994 album Wildflowers in its entirety, the second featuring more than a dozen of his most beloved tunes. That will be followed by a full-cast finale with the various vocalists pitching in one some of Petty’s biggest hits.
The event takes place for one night only at the Goodyear Theater. Tickets are $20 and $25. To order them, go to goodyeartheater.com or call 330-253-2488.
