Cleveland Clubs Are Jumping on New Year’s Eve

Mon 12/31

There’s never a dearth of places to go on New Year’s Eve, with celebrations to fit every taste and pocketbook, some casual, some fancy, some needing advance reservations, some just drop in on the spur of the moment (It’s always smart to call ahead).

Nighttown in Cleveland Heights has shows in a couple of different spaces. Vocalist Anne Cochran, who attained fame performing with her former Shaker Heights High School classmate, pop pianist Jim Brickman, performs on the main stage with her frequent duet partner Abe LaMarca, while Sammy De Leon’s Latin Jazz Septet will be making things lively in the Stephen’s Green patio room. Both are doing early and late shows, but the Cochran/LeMarca late show is already sold out, and the others may be as the night gets closer. Cochran/LaMarca tix are $40; Sammy De Leon is $30.

Jam band/party music fans will want to head over to the Beachland where Freak Drop 2019 will be taking place in both rooms, with music by popular reggae/rock/funk/hip hop ensemble Tropedelic, who put the evening together and headline, along with Zach Deputy, Toby and the Quasi Kings. The kitchen will stay open until midnight to keep the fuel flowing. Tickets are $45 in advance, $50 at the door. Doors open at 8.

The Grog Shop and B-Side are hosting a Virtual NYE with music filling both venues, provided by four popular local dance music crews — Steelyard Soundsystem, Church of Drum n Bass, Rapture and Cumulus — spinning EDM and drum & bass music starting at 9pm. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

The Music Box has two shows for different tastes going on. Upstairs in the concert Hall Steely Dan tribute band the FM Project will be playing the cerebral music of that audiophile favorite of the 70s. General admission is $50-$60. Doors open at 7:30; show starts at 9. Downstairs in the super club The Sunrise Jones will be hosting a “80s and More” dance party, starting at 9, with doors at 7:30. Tickets are $50 and $55. Both upstairs and downstairs tickets include a $25 food/beverage credit, plus party favors and a champagne toast at midnight.

And finally, for those with more of an indie, off-the-wall sensibility, Mahalls 20 Lanes is hosting the Weird Wedding & Beetle Ball starting at 9pm. Zacharian Durr hosts the events, which include goth, new wave and world music spun by DJs Himiko GoGo (WCSB-FM), Glacial 23 (The Chamber) and video artist Wes Johansen who will also be providing visuals and countdown projections. The evening also features a mystery wedding and themed cocktails. Admission is $15.
