While women aren’t the rare exception in hip hop they used to be, and some, such as Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, have become ubiquitous superstars, they still stand out in a field crowded with men.
In Cleveland, the two women who comprise FreshProduce have been standing out on their own merits for the past four years. Brittany Benton aka DJ Red-I and Samantha Flowers aka Playne Jayne served notice to the community with their debut album We Are FreshProduce in 2015. The intrepid twosome has continued to release material on their own Cleveland-based Fresh by Nature Records and for a while were even running a Little Kings record store on the near west side.
And they’ve continued to spit out the deft beats and smart, skillful rhymes, leading up to their fourth release, Phases, out this week. They’ll celebrate with a show at the Grog Shop, with Tribe Untitled and Malik X sharing the bill. Tickets are $7 in advance, $10 at the door.
