Douglas Max Utter Career Survey at HEDGE Gallery Highlights This Month’s 78th Street Third Friday

Fri 4/19 @ 5-9PM

The banner event at this month’s Third Friday at 78th Street Studios is the opening of Falling From the Sky of Now, a comprehensive showing of the work of one of Cleveland’s most prominent and accomplished artists, Douglas Max Utter.

The show covers his lengthy career, including some never-before-exhibited oil paintings from the early 70s through the 80s and mixed media work from the 1900s and early 2000s, along with his most recent work. This will give visitors a chance to follow the story of Utter’s career and life, his concerns over the years and what ideas, emotions and media have absorbed him at different times, as his work has variously dealt with history, religion, the human figure, landscape and his childhood memories.

The show also celebrates the 10th anniversary of HEDGE Gallery and its mission to show some of the best of northeast Ohio’s currently working artists. It opens with a reception Fri 4/19 @ 5-9pm and remains on view through Fri 6/7.

There’s lots more to check out too. Susie Frazier is having a “garage” sale outside her showroom, with furniture, tools, supplies, decor and more, starting at noon. “Poetry psychic” Denis Michael Griesmer will be stationed on the Ramp level across from the freight elevator to illuminate your fate through random verse.

If you’re not ready to go home at 9pm, there’s a free comedy showcase at Superelectric Pinball on the Ramp level, and at the opposite end of the building, at Survival Kit Gallery on the top floor, two Brooklyn bands Green & Glass and Moonheart will be playing, with Cleveland’s Joe Tomino aka Audio Debris playing an opening percussion set.

And, as always, much much more.
