Back in March, the Darl Center for the Arts in Slavic Village hosted another of its distinctive and exciting events—a wearable art fashion show, featuring garments made from materials such as plastic, paper, metal and wood by artists from as close as Cleveland and as far away as Alaska, where the Darl Center’s irrepressible founder/owner, Darl Schaaff, was an events planner, as well as an art collector, for more than 40 years.
The showstoppers were the wooden outfits created by former Alaskan David Walker, which, until he was contacted by Darl, were sitting in pieces in storage. Now Darl has prevailed upon him to allow them to remain in Cleveland for a while, for an exhibit of wearable art which, if you didn’t see the fashion show, you should certainly see — or just go see them again. There’ll also be work by Lori Bradford, Sheila Wyne and Larry Depute on view.
If you’re curious, of course you’ll be welcome at the public opening reception this week where light refreshments will be served, and Darl himself, always a genial host, will be glad to tell you all about his space, a ten-sided former Carnegie Library built in 1904 and vacant for decades when he bought it in 2022, and the diverse collection of art and artifacts he’s got on display. It’s free to attend; just RSVP to darl@darlcollection.com.

Had not heard of this space previously.
What a wonderful re-purposing of an historic space.
