Fall is the time when gallery art shows get into full swing, so it’s no surprise that after a sleepy summer, 78th Street Studios is bursting with new shows all over the building this Third Friday.
HEDGE Gallery has a brand new show called Cultural Mysticism, featuring four Cleveland Institute of Art graduates. Brian Mouhlas’ recent oil paintings are the centerpiece of the show, his first solo exhibition at HEDGE.
Blending abstraction and representation, including landscapes, figures and found imagery, he looks at the elements of mysticism in our media-driven culture. The show will be augmented with sculptural works by CIA grads Suzanne Head, Thomas Kassai, and Kim Menapace relevant to Mouhlas’ work. The show remains on view through Fri 11/1.

Outside the Mainstream: Douglas Max Utter Selects at ARTneo looks at the figure in Cleveland art, in work chosen by one of the area’s leading figurative Artists, Doug Utter. Utter co-curated this show with ARTneo’s Christopher L. Richards to show the range of approaches area artists have taken to depicting the human figure. The show features 33 artists, both those with long-established reputations and rising younger artists.
The Derek Hess Gallery will be presenting a one-night-only show, You Are What You Wear 2, another display of T-shirts collected over the years by a local rock & roll fan, or in this case, two fans. Those fans are local musician Tom Dark, known for bands like Stepsister, Knifedance and the Dark and his record label Hit & Run Records, and his wife, music fan/college radio host Mary Ellen Tomazic. The collection shows how they wear their love of punk and post-punk on their chests. It features 57 shirts from the ’70s and ’80s including the Clash, the Cramps, Nirvana, Black Flag and the Misfits. It includes such rare gems as Misfits and Samhain shirts hand-screened by bands’ frontman Glenn Danzig.
At E11even2 Gallery, co-owners Billy Nainiger, Christina Sadowski and Rich Cihlar have put together another of their themed shows, this one featuring their own art. The theme of Dangerous is the Cleveland Browns it features both mixed-media and painted pieces. They’ve also created a limited edition Dangerous koozie. The show is on view through Fri 11/15.
