No Exit New Music Presents NYC Duo andPlay Who Produce “Translucent Harmonies”

Thu 5/11 @ 7-8PM

Cleveland’s No Exit New Music not only assembles concerts featuring new commissions and influential avant-garde classics performed by its own circle of musician, it also acts as a presenter for like-minded ensembles from out of town.

This week it’ll be hosting a concert at SPACES called “Translucent Harmonies,” by a New York City duo that calls itself andPlay, comprising violinist Maya Bannardo and violist Hannah Levinson. The program will feature two pieces subtle tonal shifts, dealing in “sound, silence, and resonance,” they say.

The featured pieces are stenmuren blir tanken blomma by Swedish composer Kristofer Svensson and Prisma Interius VIII by American Catherine Lamb (USA), both composed using Just Intonation, a system that dictates particular relationships of intervals between notes.

“The rare experience of hearing a full program in Just Intonation invites one to listen in a very detailed way to the sensation of tone,” they say. “This shifts the concept of intonation, which is often unnoticed by the listener, to the foreground, where it becomes a focal point to explore the simplest, yet nuanced, relationships in sound.”

As with all No Exit concerts, it’s free and open to all. Masks are recommended but not required.
