Beck Center Presents “Bent,” a Story of Homosexuals Trying to Survive in Nazi Germany

Fri 6/1-Sun 7/1

Martin Sherman’s play Bent hit London’s West End in 1979 with Ian McKellen in the lead and Broadway the following year, starring Richard Gere. It came at a time when plays dealing frankly with gay issues were just starting to become mainstream, just before the AIDS crisis enveloped the gay comment — and by extension, the arts community.

It deals with another crisis in gay history; the persecution of homosexuals in Nazi Germany. Set in Berlin in the 30s, the central couple ends up sent to a concentration camp where obviously this story doesn’t end well for anyone.

Perhaps mindful of the fact that the likes of Mike Pence would see this story as wish fulfillment, the Beck Center is staging the play this month in its studio theater. As Beck artistic director Scott Spence says, ““With world events unfolding every day, this is perhaps the most timely play of the season.”

It will be performed Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm and Sundays @ 3pm through Sun 7/1. Tickets are $31, $27 for seniors and $12 for students with ID. The content is adult so this means older students.
