Most music, both past and contemporary, is inspired by that eternal obsession, love. So it’s easy of an ensemble such as Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland’s baroque orchestra, to put together a romantic program for Valentine’s Day weekend.
L’Amore, An Old Italian Valentine will feature flirtatious pieces by Claudio Monteverdi, Antonio Vivaldi, Barbara Strozzi and Nicola Porpora, ranging from the early 17th century to the mid 18th century. Apollo’s Fire’s founder/artistic director Jeannette Sorrell will be on harpsichord, with violinists Olivier Brault, Alan Choo, Adriane Post and Carrie Krause featured soloists, and soprano Erica Schuller and tenor Brian Gieber on vocals.
They’ll perform at Akron’s First United Methodist on Thursday, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights on Friday and Saturday, and Rocky River Presbyterian Church on Sunday. AF musicians Brian Kay and William Simms will give a talk one hour before each concert. Tickets start at $22.
