WOLFS Gallery Shows Work of Master Wildlife Wood Sculptor

Fri 10/16 @ 5:30-8PM

Though the work shown and sold by WOLFS Gallery in Beachland leans toward 20th century painting, including many artists of the Cleveland School it has occasionally mounted shown in other media such as print and sculpture. The latter will be on view in its next show, Beyond The Third Dimension: Superrealistic Wood Carvings, featuring the work of 83-year-old Ohio artist John T. Sharp. It’s very different from what you usually see in fine art galleries.

Sharp is noted across the country as one of its most prominent wildlife wood sculptors. With a passion for both wood and wildlife, he makes life-size sculptures created from a single log, drawing on traditional American folk art, including wildlife decoys, as well as early modern European still life painting. The finished art emerges from the wood as a single unit. This show will include some of his one-piece reductions carved out of local American hardwoods such as cherry and black walnut, pieces in which he lets the characteristics of the wood rather than a preliminary sketch or design, dictate the intricate wildlife scenes that emerge.

The show opens with a free public reception on Friday Ocotber 16, and will be on view through January 30.
