In more than 45 years, Dancing Wheels has carved out both a local and national (and international!) reputation for its innovative approach to choreography, which integrates wheelchair and “standup” dancers. Founded in 1980 by Mary Verdi-Fletcher who was born with spina bifida, it presents dance tailored to people of all abilities.

It’s upcoming performance, “Dancing Wheels: Arts & Artists—A New Interpretation” at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium will present works choreography by the company’s dancers inspired by works in the museum’s collection. They use the distinctive qualities of the pieces they based their works on — their visual qualities, as well as their historical context and their own emotional response the works, translating those qualities into movement and they say, “considering how bodies, wheelchairs, space, music, and relationships can communicate an artwork’s essence without simply re-creating it.”

The pieces were choreographed by eight company members: Zachary Biggs, Angelina DiFranco, Emilyann Dustman, Kylie Karam, Sarah Lawrence-Sucato, Alexandra Martinez, DeMarco Sleeper, and Nehemiah Spencer. Go HERE to get tickets.
