Cleveland Cello Society Hosts Rising Colombian Musician

Wed 10/21 @ 7:30PM

Santiago Cañón-Valencia is a rising star in the classical music world. The 31-year-old cellist/composer from Bogotá, Colombia, first performed with an orchestra at the age of six; more recently he was named a BBC New Generation Artist in 2022.  He’s already performed around the world, performing standard repertoire as well as new pieces he’s commissioned, and he makes his Carnegie Hall debut November 10.

Before that show, however, he’ll be playing at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium. His concert will feature Solo Suites No. 1 in G Major and No. 5 in C Minor by J. S. Bach, Sonata for Solo Cello by George Crumb, and two of his own compositions. In addition to being a cellist and composer, Cañón-Valencia is a photographer, and painter, and his visual interests inspire his compositions. They will also be part of his concert at CMA, with paintings that inspired specific pieces on the program projected on a large screen while he plays.

The concert is presented by the Cleveland Cello Society. Go HERE for tickets.
