Giselle is one of the classic long-form story ballet, first performed in Paris in 1841 during ballet’s romantic era.
It tells the story of a country girl named Giselle who is romanced by the aristocratic Albrecht whom she discovers is already engaged. When it’s revealed to her by a local suitor, she dies of heartbreak. That’s the end of the first act. The second act is spookier, set in a forest graveyard and featuring the underworld spirits, the Wilies, the spirits of young women betrayed by their lovers. Despite Albrecht’s fight for her, she becomes one with them before breaking their spell and returning to a peaceful grave.
The Cleveland Ballet will perform Giselle at Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace Theatre for three performances this weekend with Svetlana Svinko and Anna Cole sharing the title role, and Johan Mancebo and Lorenzo Pontiggia sharing the role of Albrecht. The company will dance the famous Marius Petipa choreography he designed for late 19th-century revivals of the ballet, with additional choreography by company director Timour Bourtasenkov.
