Beloved local sax player Norman Tischler died in early 2019 and there was hardly any area musician he hadn’t played with at least once in the 50 years he’d lived in Cleveland. The list of bands he played with is too long to relate, and He was known for showing up in clubs, his saxophone case in hand, waiting for the inevitable call to join the band onstage. When the presiding rabbi at his memorial service at The Temple Tifereth-Israel (now Mishkan Or) asked anyone who had ever played with him to stand up, half the people in the packed sanctuary rose.
Tischler served as music director of the Workman’s Circle Klezmer Orchestra, founded in 1995 to perform the distinctive Eastern European Jewish folk music, in English, Hebrew and Yiddish. After he died, it renamed itself the Tischler Klezmer Orchestra in his memory which will always be blessed.
The group will be performing a concert at the Friendship Pavilion at the Coventry PEACE Park in Cleveland Heights. It’s free and open to all.
