This Friday, SPACES will be opening the doors on a new show called A Black Prayer, an immersive installation by inter-disciplinary artist-in-residence Yelaine Rodriguez that draws on photography, film, performance and sculpture. She draws on her life and background as a person of Afro-Dominican ancestry living in New York to explore Afro-syncretism, and architectural and ancestral memory.
The show includes a re-imagined version of her video performance art piece, Miss Doc, which draws on the story of an early Black woman physician, Dr. Sarah Loguen Fraser, whose grandmother was born free and kidnapped into slavery and whose father was a well-known abolitionist who escaped slavery by crossing the Ohio River. She’ll also premiere a short film about Northeast Ohio’s extensive engagement in the Underground Railroad, with Harriet Tubman portrayed by Cleveland dancer Eboni Darkenwald.
And the gallery will be filled with ceramic lanterns, bricks and found objects suggesting the search for freedom via the Underground Railroad. It’s free ad open to the public.
