Riverdog Barn continues its packed summer season — with two more months of concerts to go! — with a modern bluegrass band out of Nashville called DownRiver Collective. “Modern” bluegrass means that the band’s music is strongly informed by traditional bluegrass tropes but looks elsewhere for additional influences. DownRiver Collective also draws in old-time folk music, classic country, pop and rock to create its own sound using the traditional bluegrass instrumentation of fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitars and copious vocal harmonies.
A relatively new entry into this burgeoning field, if the number of excellent such bands Riverdog books is any indication, the group started in 2019 and released its debut EP Off the Shelf in late 2023. That EP put the band on many people’s radars, and in 2024, they were voted the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Momentum Band of the Year. Their first full-length album, Give It All Away, dropped the following year to confirm that they deserved that honor.
