This month, the Cleveland Museum of Art’s popular MIX party will have a theme of Island Vibes, lingering a little longer on a summery atmosphere. It honors 50 years since reggae and reggae-influenced music made an international impact, when Bob Marley’s 1976 album Rastaman Vibration broke through in the U.S. following his international hit with “No Woman, No Cry” the previous year.
Appropriately, the live music for the evening will be provided with Cleveland’s best-known reggae artist Carlos Jones, who performs today with his P.L.U.S. Band (Peace, Love, Unity Syndicate). But his roots go back to 1978 when he became a member of I-Tal, Cleveland’s first non-Jamaican reggae band which brought the music into the white rock & roll community. In 1984, most of I-Tal’s members broke away to form First Light which rose to become Cleveland’s biggest drawing band during its 14-year run. Carlos will perform at 6:20. He’s be flanked at 6 and 7:20pm with sets by DJ Maxafari who’ll play a mix of reggae, dancehall, dub, ska and other Caribbean sounds.
