Black Art Expo Returns After 15-Year Break

After a break of 15 years, Glenville based Sankofa Arts is bringing back its Sankofa Black Art Expo, this time to Shaker Square, in conjunction with the 15th Annual Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival which is going on this weekend as well at the Atlas Theaters at Shaker Square.

The three-day event aims to bring together artists, collectors and community members to bask in the breadth and depth of Black art talent in Northeast Ohio.

There are several different groups of exhibitions taking place in and around Shaker Square. In the Spotlight Exhibition: One Powerful Community, taking place at the Jamron Khan Photography Studio, featured artists Stina Aleah,vNana Kwesi Agyare, Davon Brantley, Myrya Johnson, Sylvia Munodawafa, Vince Robinson, and Jerome White will show work addressing themes of community, resilience and identity.in painting, photography and mixed media. In the Black Art Expo Tent on the Shaker Square South Lawn, 12 artists and representatives of Black-owned galleries will be showing original art and prints available for purchase.

An opening celebration takes place Friday evening from 7-9pm in the Expo Tent, where you can meet artists, dance to music by DJ Candy Fresca and enjoy refreshments. There are artist talks and special programming throughout the Expo. Go HERE for a schedule.
