It’s off season for Dobama Theatre in Cleveland Heights (their 2026-27 season starts in September) but that doesn’t mean they’ve got nothing going on. This week for four nights, they’ll be doing a staged reading of the 2023 play, What’s Wrong with the World, by Israeli playwright Gur Koren. It’s described as “a sentimental comedy about keeping up when things keep on a-changin’… [that] sets a collision course between a woman who just wants to see her family happy, and her kids, the younger generation, who might be ruling the world, but don’t necessarily know what to do with it.”
It revolves around a 70-year-old woman who tries to save her son’s marriage after he has a fight with his wife, which takes her on a wild journey of confronting cultural and generational divides.
Dobama’s artistic director Nathan Motta directs the presentation of the “Texas adaptation” of the work. “This translation is uniquely fascinating in that it demonstrates the Israeli playwright’s/adapter’s perspective on American culture and brings to light the universality of what is means to be a family,” they tell us.
