Los Angeles-based collector/musician Greg Wooten, a native Clevelander, has an odd hobby. He collects old vinyl album covers they’ve found in used record bins that have been “reworked” by anonymous “artists.” His 2019 book Marred for Life! features more than 250 images of album covers by musicians and bands such as Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Nina Simone, Daid Bowie, The Velvet Underground, Prince, LL Cool Jay, Yoko Ono and more, mysterious commentary on what the defacer may have thought about the music. He now has more than 5,000 such album jackets!
When Wooten returns to Cleveland for a show of his collection at Sixty Bowls Gallery in Ohio City’s Hingetown neighborhood, he obviously had to be selective, so about 150 of the items will be on view. The show opens with a reception on Saturday August 22 from 5-8pm. Wooten will be signed copies of his book which will be available for purchase.
But there is another, hands-on way you can participate! Blue Arrow records is sponsoring an album cover defacement contest,]. Add your artwork to any album jacket (Blue Arrow has plenty available for purchase if you don’t have one) and drop it off at Blue Arrow by Friday August 21 at 4pm (They’re open Friday-Sunday @ noon-4pm) All entries will be shown at the reception at Sixty Bowls where the public will be able to vote on their favorite, with the winner announced at 7:30pm receiving a $50 Blue Arrow gift certificate. They will also have a $50 donation made in their name to the Waterloo Alley Cat Project, founded by Blue Arrow owners Debbie and Pete Gulyas.
